Zirconium Oxide Ceramic

In contrast to other ceramic materials, zirconium oxide ceramic has a very high resistance to the spread of cracks. In addition, zirconium oxide based ceramic has a very high heat expansion and is therefore often chosen when realizing connections between ceramics and steel.

Another outstanding properties combination of sintered zirconium oxide (ZrO2) ceramic is the very low thermal conductivity and at the same time high strength. In addition, some zirconium dioxide ceramics have an oxygen ion conductivity. On the cost side, components made of zirconium zirconia are significantly higher than components made of another popular oxide ceramic - aluminum oxide alumina. White and black 95 zirconium oxide is usually used, for example, as tools for wire forming, as aids in welding processes, as material for crowns and bridges in the dental industry, as an insulating ring in thermal processes and as an oxygen measuring cell in the lambda probe.

Pure ZrO2 is white, yellow or gray when it contains impurities, and generally contains HfO2, which is not easy to separate. The world's proven zirconium resources are about 19 million tons, and zirconium oxide is usually made from zirconium ore. There are three crystal states of pure ZrO2 under normal pressure: monoclinic zirconium oxide (m-ZrO2), tetragonal zirconium oxide (t-ZrO2) and cubic zirconium oxide (c-ZrO2). Types exist in different temperature ranges and can be transformed into each other under different temperature environment. In practical applications, in order to obtain the required crystal form and performance, different types of stabilizers are usually added to make different types of zirconia ceramics, such as yttria stabilized zirconium oxide (Y2O3-ZrO2) and cetrium stabilized zirconium oxide (CeO2-ZrO2).
