YSZ Ceramic

YSZ Ceramic is one of the oldest oxide ceramic materials and was first produced about 80 years ago like alumina and magnesium oxide. Yttria stabilized zirconia at UNIPRETEC in the recent past has so-called high-performance ceramic been produced by adding certain oxides. High-performance ceramics are materials that combine typical ceramic characteristics (resistance to high temperature, resistance to corrosion, resistance to wear) with properties known only from e.g. metals (high strength and toughness) on the other hand.

The high-strength of yttrium zirconia ceramic, well known as CERAMIC STEEL, is doped with yttrium oxide (Y2O3) as a stabilizer. UNIPRETEC provides the so-called 5Y-TZP (with 5% by weight yttrium oxide) or as 3Y-TZP (with 3 mol% yttrium oxide) named, doped tetragonal stabilized polycrystalline zirconia as high-performance ceramic in in our range.

Yttrium oxide stabilized zirconium oxide belongs as an inorganic, non-metallic material to the group of oxide ceramics. Stabilized with yttrium oxide, zirconium oxide obtains outstanding properties such as maximum strength and crack toughness. Due to the very good polish-ability and the low friction compared to steel, components made of yttria stabilised zirconium oxide are optimally suited as a guide or stop. Yttria stabilised zirconia dioxide is characterized by particularly high resistance to thermal, chemical and mechanical influences. Due to its high strength and outstanding impact resistance, yttria stabilized ZrO2 is considered ceramic steel.
