Stud Welding Ceramic Ferrule

Stud welding ceramic ferrule is made of cordierite ceramic, which is a cheap fine material with very low coefficient of thermal expansion and extremly resistant to high thermal shock. Cordierite ceramic ferrule is being used for multiple purposes in stud welding. First, the cordierite ferrule serves to protect the arc from the user. Second, it minimizes the atmosphere that the flux would purge. Third, the ferrule guides the molten metal into the fillet. Eventually, the fillet vents enable weld gases to escape.

Weld stud ceramic ferrule are disposable objects. As disposable objects they are mass produced easily and inexpensively. Ceramic ferrule for stud welding was cast in a mold out of a low grade moldable industrial ceramic - cordierite. They are brought out of the mold, and are dried and sintered in high temperature furnace. Because of this production technique, stud welding ferrule tolerances may be larger than machining or other manufacturing methods. Therefore, it is not advised to fixture off of a ferrule when precise location is requested.
