Alumina (Al2O3 or Aluminum Oxide), Zirconia (ZrO2 or Zirconium Oxide), ZTA, Silicon Carbide(SiC), and Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) are the most often used technical ceramics for ceramic pump shaft.

Here is a short overview of the characteristics of various ceramics. The alumina shaft is the least expensive choice, weighing 3.65-3.90 g/cm3, and comes in a variety of grades, like 95 percent, 99 percent, 99.5 percent, and 99.8 percent. The zirconia shaft has the maximum density, exceeding 6.0 g/cm3, and the most important distinction is that the zirconia content has the HIGHEST fracture hardness for advanced ceramics, overcoming ceramics' innate brittleness and making it ideal for high polishing. ZTA is a zirconia composite alumina material with a density of 4.0 g/cm3, which combines high fracture resistance with low cost. Silicon nitride is the most expensive material, but it still has the greatest density (3.2 g/cm3) and the lightest weight, silicon nitride shafts can also be polished to a mirror finish of Ra 0.05um and have excellent wear and corrosion resistance. The density of silicon carbide shaft is similar to that of silicon nitride. The wear resistance of silicon carbide is much higher than that of aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide, and its sealing and thermal stability are very good.
