Zirconia (ZrO2) Ceramic
Zirconia (ZrO2) ceramic, sometimes known as "ceramic steel," is a ceramic material that combines high wear and corrosion resistance with one of the highest fracture toughness among all ceramic material.
While zirconia comes in a variety of grades, the popular ones are Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia (Y-PSZ) and Zirconia Toughend Alumina (ZTA). Both of the two materials offer excellent properties. However, the operating environment and design will determine which grade is appropriate for certain applications. Its exceptional resistance to fracture propagation and high thermal expansion make it a highly suitable material for joining with metals such as steel.
Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YTZP)
Yttria stabilized;
Fine-grained microstructure, predominantly tetragonal phase;
Extremely high strength and toughness;
Use temperatures below 500°C;
Transformation toughened to resist crack propagation;
Superior chemical resistance;
Excellent wear resistance.
Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA)
Zirconia toughened alumina;
It offers strength that is 20-30% higher than alumina and costs less than stabilized zirconia;
Transformation toughened;
Higher toughness, hardness and wear resistance than alumina.
Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YTZP)
Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YTZP) is the strongest ceramic material we offer. YTZP is a fine-grained, completely tetragonal phase material. This material has the highest flexural strength among all Zirconia-based materials. YTZP has a property called transformation toughening, which helps it to resist fracture propagation. When applied stress is increased by the stress concentration at the tip of a fracture, the tetragonal phase can transform into the monoclinic, resulting in an expansion of volume.
The crack may subsequently enter a compression state as a result of this phase transition, which will slow its propagation and increase the fracture toughness. Products manufactured using stabilized zirconia have far longer lifespan and more dependability thanks to this mechanism. Because of its exceptional strength and toughness, as well as its greater erosion resistance and significantly stronger resistance to chemicals, YTZP is a good substitute for metals.
ZTA Ceramic
The primary benefit of zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) is that it is less expensive than zirconia (YTZP, MSZ, CSZ) and offers more strength and toughness than alumina. When combined with 10-20% zirconium oxide, alumina offers significantly greater strength, toughness, hardness, and wear resistance than alumina alone. The 20-30% improvement in strength usually satisfies the design criteria at a far lower cost than using zirconia.
A process called transformation toughening is the phenomenon that increases the fracture toughness of ZTA. The zirconia particles undergo a crystal structure transition from tetragonal to monoclinic when subjected to stress. This transformation causes a volume expansion, which can reduce the surrounding crack in the alumina matrix.
ZTA should be considered for any application that requires structural strength surpassing that of conventional alumina properties.

Zirconia Ceramic Machining
Zirconia can be machined in green, biscuit, and fully dense states. While in green or biscuit state, it is quite easy to manufacture into intricate geometries. Nevertheless, the zirconia body shrinks by around 20% as a result of the sintering process, which is required to completely densify the material. Due to this shrinkage, extremely precise tolerances cannot be maintained when machining zirconia pre-sintered body.
To reach extremely tight tolerances, the fully sintered material must be machined/ground using diamond tools. Material will be processed until the desired shape is achieved using a very precise diamond-coated tool or wheel. This can be an expensive and time-consuming procedure because of the material's inherent toughness and hardness.
