Machining Boron Nitride Ceramic, also known as WHITE GRAPHITE, is one fo two popular machinable ceramic materials, the other one is Machinable Glass Ceramic. The Mohs hardness of Boron Nitride is only 2-3, the one of machinable glass ceramic is about 4-5, so boron nitride is much softer and easier to be processed. Boron nitride has a unique combination of chemical, electrical and thermal properties as sintered advanced technical ceramics. Machinable boron nitride is used in a wide range of high-performance industrial applications. These include high-temperature furnace construction, ceramic manufacturing and the semiconductor industry.

The boron nitride machinable ceramic is caused by unidirectional hot pressing. The flat hexagonal crystal structure is aligned with hot pressing. The atoms of the platelet plane are held by covalent bonds in hexagonal arrangement, resulting in the excellent physical, thermal and electrical performances. Between the adjacent layers, so-called Van der Waals bindings are called, which ensure excellent lubrication.

Our machining hexagonal boron nitride classes are fully editable ceramic products. They can be easily milled and rotated with HSS or VHM tools. Commercially available taps are sufficient for threads. The processing should always be done dry. Always keep the cutting edges sharp and clean. Never use negative cutting angles. As a guideline for machining boron nitride, please assume a spindle speed of 1,000-2,000 rpm and a feed of 0.25-0.75 mm/U.
